Opinion: There’s a rough ride ahead for any legislation that dances around technology and how we communicate, hscoffield writes.

We all know there’s a third element stirring the pot in the vicious conflict that has pitted supporters of the so-called “Freedom Convoy” against the rest of us: social media.

On Wednesday, just as the political temperature rose to a boiling point — as horn-honking protesters shut down central Ottawa and the Conservatives showed their leader the door — the Liberals dropped a piece of legislation into the mix, the first of three bills that aim to regulate the scope of social media and web giants in Canada.

“We want to make sure that our children, our future generations grow up as we did, having the chance to watch our stories and listen to our songs, to our Canadian songs,” Rodriguez says.If the last iteration of the bill is any indication, the Official Opposition will find plenty. Last year, C-10 barely made it through the House and died in the Senate after it became a lightning rod for freedom-of-speech evangelists.

Ideally, this could all be an important and rational debate if it were held in a vacuum. But context is everything right now. But the finer points of drafting good legislation are not what’s on the minds of those who have adopted freedom of speech for their battle cry in the streets of Ottawa and in Parliament.

hscoffield MP Rodriguez has already done better job sounding reasonable but the fly in the ointment is the fact that CRTC will have to rely on tech companies to pick who is professional & not... Do you think these companies won't abuse that power?

hscoffield No kidding. I would consider a second effort as 'this means war'. I'm sure millions of other Canadians feel the same way. The liberals are corrupt and incompetent.

hscoffield Hey, let's have the open communication: being manipulated by huge FOREIGN corporations that antagonize Canadians for ADVERTISING REVENUE is what we need to curtail. Canadians can communicate, but not be subject to manipulation by foreign for-profit interests. Ban the tracking!

hscoffield The bigger fight should be ending the Bell Rogers monopoly in canada so we pay non ripoff prices like every other first world country. That's maybe something you should be protesting about TruckersConvoy2022

hscoffield The government needs to get its nose out of our lives. Tracking us during covid should be the canary in the mine.
