Australia must help south-east Asian nations build internet infrastructure and cyber security or else China will do it instead.

It is increasingly evident that the regional Association of South-East Asian Nations cannot agree on many significant regional issues, whether it is the South China Sea disputes, Myanmar crisis, or even AUKUS. But if there is one thing that all countries agree on is the recovery from COVID-19.

And the digital economy is seen as an enabler that can propel the region from pandemic-induced stagnation. The ASEAN leaders vowed to work to “propel the region towards aWithout assistance, the gap between the digitally enabled and those deprived of such opportunity will continue to grow in ASEAN nations.Recent estimates suggest that some 30 million people in southeast Asia have lost their jobs since the pandemic broke out.

The estimates are likely to underestimate the scale of spiralling violence and instability in Myanmar and the effect on people’s livelihoods there too. With the omicron variant looming, manufacturing, tourism and labour force exports – the region’s main sectors – are yet to bounce back. Women and girls are most severely affected as they constitute the majority of the “gig economy”.

Since the pandemic, this populous and relatively young region has registered some 70 million new internet users. The pandemic has shifted the market to e-commerce, including the embrace of digital payments and a boom in online services and apps.

Or we will do it and pay for it and then China will rock into town with an even bigger cheque and use it. Just like in the Pacific Islands. Dumb idea sunshine.

I reckon the headline should be “Australia must destroy the SEA nations’ fast internet infrastructure or else it will remain the slowest in the region.”

'NSA can't spy on entire planet if western equipment is not installed at all critical nodes'

Australia, with no better than third world internet infrastructure, are going to intervene and prevent China, with world leading internet infrastructure and the highest quality technology from supplying south east Asia? Umm, that’s the dumbest thing you’ll read today

Australia needs to fix it's own internet

I don't think ASEAN need Australian to tell them what is good for ASEAN. Perhaps Australia needs to learn about self-determination from ASEAN.

S E Asia excluding Singapore right ? Think Australia need Singapore's help rather .....

that's a netbook in the pic, faithful reflection of australia's level of internet tech😂😂😂😂😂

Most south-east Asian countries are capable of doing it themselves. Given the what was done with NBN they will not be that enthusiastic.

Australia should first decide whether they want to be dovish or hawkish, either economically or politically or both, on communism, & then they can go ahead and stop pretending to play both sides. It's one way or the other, either our way or the highway.
