Image: Alamy Stock Photo Image: Alamy Stock Photo THE EU’S DRUG regulator said it would decide whether the Novavax coronavirus jab will become the fifth vaccine approved for the bloc at a meeting next Monday.

Novavax’s so-called protein subunit technology is similar to that used in the decades-old Hepatitis B and whooping cough vaccines that are widely used around the world.Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna both use pioneering mRNA technology that teaches the body’s cells to make a harmless piece of protein found on the surface of the virus that causes Covid-19.

The Novavax jab instead contains tiny particles made from a version of a protein found on the surface of the coronavirus spike protein, made in a laboratory.
