The no-heat styling technique is taking the internet by storm.

It turns out my predictions were wrong though, because getting through my tangles has proven harder than ever lately. I don’t know whether it’s due to split ends , but recently I’ve struggled to detangle my hair no matter how much conditioner I use, and thanks to extremely stubborn knots, I’ve been losing more hair in the detangling process.

Here’s how plopping works: First you apply your regular styling products to freshly washed, still damp hair. Next you lay a microfiber towel—not a traditional one; this is key to minimize frizz—or an old T-shirt down on a flat surface. Then, and here’s where the name for the technique comes in, you bend over andFinally, roll the fabric up around your head like a turban, and tuck it in the back so it stays put.

You should leave your hair plopped for at least an hour, but I kept mine up for a little longer while I worked . Despite its resembling the Pillsbury Doughboy, I thought it looked kind of cute, and when I took it down, I could tell my curls had set in a more shapely texture than when I just let them air-dry.After you take your hair down, it probably won’t be completely dry, and it’s up to you whether you want to diffuse it or let the air do its thing.
