Here's how the company Plume is using mobile technology and telehealth to build a healthcare company for the trans community:

Still, getting access to hormones for gender-affirming treatments has traditionally been fraught with friction. Few doctors have experience with trans patients and gender therapies. Clinics that specialize in trans care are mostly found in major urban centers and can have months-long waiting lists. Even if one gets treatment, convincing insurance to cover the therapies is often complicated and stressful. A recent survey nearly 50% of trans patients had treatments denied by insurers.

Plume was built to change all that. For $99 a month, patients get remote doctor appointments, virtual checkups, prescriptions for hormone treatments , lab tests and other resources like letters for official name and gender changes. The cash model removes insurance company stress and, since health insurance is often tied to employment healthcare plans, removes the risk of losing gender therapy if a person loses or changes jobs.

Originally named Mariposa Health, Plume is available in 12 states. Plume’s employees are 80% transgender. “We built a company with a service essentially run, organized and delivered by people who share the same life experience as the people they’re serving,” says Dr. Wetschler, Plume’s cofounder and CEO. “That not only resonates in our brand but is authentically who we are as a company.”

While still in its early days, Plume is looking to expand its service to other states and eventually add services beyond hormone therapies. The ultimate goal: Become the go-to healthcare company for America’s trans community. “We serve a very vulnerable population with limited access to health services,” says Kirkley. “We want to make a radically better healthcare experience for trans folks and extend the availability of treatments as far as we can.”
