TOKYO — When the Japanese government declared an emergency to curb the spread of the coronavirus earlier this month and asked people to work from home, crowds rushed to electronics stores. Many Japanese lack the basic tools needed to work from home. Contrary to the ultramodern image of Japan Inc. with its robots, design finesse and gadgetry galore, in many respects the country is technologically challenged.

In India, nearly 70% of those surveyed were staying home. In the U.S., it was about 30%, according to YouGov. Tazawa is offering an online crash course on how to immediately start working from home, using just mobile phones, if a personal computer is not available. She calls the approach a “hypothetical cloud office.”

A lack of up-to-date IT systems means Japan lags in nurturing flexible work practices, office rules, management methods and even attitudes toward remote work. It’s one factor contributing to relatively low labor productivity. It’s rare to find an office that doesn’t have one, unless it’s a futuristic company like SoftBank that frowns on such old-fashioned practices. Many respectable institutions shun emails and insist on receiving requests for information or other documentation by fax only.

Chuo-ku, Tokyo on April 8th of the same day.

'Many homes lack high-speed internet connections' This sentence isn't correct, Japanese have relatively high speed connection at home. It's the corporate culture which forces workers to meet face to face in the office that prevent them to work at home.

See what happened to DSi, best games across platforms already appointed to be Millenarian Tradition by Illuminated Master in a millennium, ten years after first publishing! Who d kill for ONE D$i or cartridge in a few years?

yurikageyama sorry, missing in the article the aspect of small apartments, lack of private space and/or work space at homes in the urban cities.

Is it the Chinese Communist Party's direction that the Associated Press is reporting the fake news using images taken at least over 53 days ago?

India seems to be the most technologically developed country in the world and Germany the least, according to YouGov, the only objective source this article offers.

When was this picture taken? The game ads on this train have expired on March 16th. That is, more than a month ago and before the declaration of emergency.

NO INTERNET IN JAPAN?! SINCE WHEN?!

Pray for this island nation

I am shocked 😳

No different in the towns far from signal or afford to pay for internet. Tough out even in lower income schools out away from the cities. Specially here in Michigan , same as Arizona North of 40 the native people have little access to any tech , power and water.

This is an interesting read - dig beyond the headline - not so much regarding the technology but the culture. They seem to have created a no-initiative culture where all workers must be in constant contact with each other rather like a hive of bees - I find it extraordinary.

Who wants to take their work home with them anyway?

Oh get over yourself America.

Some would say that they are more available to enjoy life when not strapped to a pc. Computers suck. Japan is my favorite asian country so far.

I worked in Japan for 6 months and this article is 100% accurate with my experience. They gave me a work cellphone and laptop that I wasn’t allowed to take out of the office! If you had to take a conference call at 9pm or later you stayed in the office to take it. Crazy.

Japan once a technologically advanced country now facing such issues, many products being made by China now have their origins in Japan. Shows and proves how a country can retards it's advancement.

I have to admit that does surprise me quite a bit.

Who would have thunk it? Japan?

Yes we're not quite 'there' yet, are we?!

Hard to believe so many Japanese do not have the internet

*looks at the photo* Oh my god WHY are they not SOCIAL DISTANCING!?
