The government has scrapped plans to force Australians to download a tracking app onto their mobile phones to trace coronavirus in the community.

On Friday, Scott Morrison said he wanted to make the app compulsory if enough people didn’t sign up for it because at least 40 per cent of the population needs to be on board to make it effective.“We will be seeking the co-operation and support of Australians to download the app to help our health workers, to protect our community and help get our economy going again,” Mr Morrison tweeted.

Mr Morrison had spruiked the need to make the app compulsory in an interview on Triple M yesterday, likening the use of tracing software to national service. “I know this would be something they might not normally do at an ordinary time but this is not an ordinary time,” he said.Better contact tracing is one of three main benchmarks the government wants to meet before strict restrictions can be lifted. The other two are a broader testing regime and a greater capacity to respond to local outbreaks.

Mr Morrison says the app won’t be used by police as evidence to prosecute people for breaching social distancing requirements. Scott Morrison said at least 40 per cent of Australians would need to download the app for it to be effective. Picture: AAP Image/Lukas Coch

Why are people so hung up about this? You are using the term freedom to get out of doing something which will ultimately help everyone, including yourself! It is paranoia home mad

It's always hard to get everyone to do the same thing anyway...because we have freedom. It's not gonna work.

People are to ignorant/selfish/stupid to self isolate and quarantine, there was zero chance they'd download an app that would track them 🤨 paranoid bogans everywhere wouldn't have a bar of it.

because the CAN'T force people to download apps to their phone... are they that STUPID? No, wait, that's not in question..

It's not mandatory but condition to relax the lockdown....

Dutton won’t be happy

It was NEVER going to force us to install the app, it was voluntary from the start. Either way, I'm not putting that junk on my phone to begin with.

Fake news yet again. Gov NEVER ever planned to make participation compulsory. Utter garbage

Keep an eye on it, this is not over...

They haven't scrapped plans to blackmail us into it though

Was never going to download it

It needs to be enshrined in legislation that the app can't be used for anything else.

So when you going to stop the crap we are being put through - corona is a figment of ur imagination- we all know the economy was going to shit itself worse than 1974

Australia is still a 'Democracy ' isn't it? Civil rights are our 'Democratic ' rights! Forced tracking apps? Next micro chipped? Sounds like a 'Dictatorship to me!

I’m putting this one under: Things that were never going to happen for $500

.ScottMorrisonMP Did you really believe you could enforce a nation to install a tracking app on their phones. You idiot... auspol2020

The word 'mandatory' was just another word fart from his mouth. It was never going to happen.

They never were going to. Press creates a beat up story then runs another beat up later in the week fakenews

No one i know was gonna download that app. They would rather fight the government than be tracked and told what to do by them.

Nice try, dickhead.

Sucked in chairman ScoMo hahahahaha

After 9-11 the world gave their privacy up. Alot said if you got nothing to hide then why worry. The corrupt certainly didn't want people snooping around. The investigators the investigate the corrupt certainly didn't want that.. So much more but hey debate what pro noun to use.

'government has scrapped plans' They do 'scrap' plans. They put them on the back burner. Nothing is more permanent than a temporary government programme. When are you people going to get this simple premise

I can see a rush on Faraday wallets.

Don’t know Y! So many Aussies so willing 2 bend over 4 gubmint control & intrusion 4 fewer than 7K confirmed WuhanVirus cases & only 65 deaths on a continent of 25M! 🦠🇦🇺😷🙄BringItOn! Rort

Sorry ScottMorrisonMP , I lost my phone

When Morrison shoots from the hip doesn’t listen to advisors he keeps proving he’s a unintelligent bullish dill pickle

Imagine the poor bloke in the Gov that has to track me walking up & down supermarket isles for 50 hours a week! 'Hey Jeff he's left the shop & now seems to be standing next to a soccer pitch doing fk all, this guys one to watch.'

I don't own a mobile phone... 😑

Clueless Morrison had to float it past you first though, amateur that he is. It'd be a slick, crashy app developed by one of his business mates that would never quite work but instead harvest your data ready to be onsold with assumed consent. Give it to the CSIRO to implement.

spartytalkback ScottMorrisonMP They have listened to you sparty apart from not tracking cononvirius they won't track your rolling activities

The public have spoken! Now the public need to force the issue and get some restrictions lifted

They could never have forced ppl anyway.

IT’S every Australians civic duty! Make it happen PM

ScottMorrisonMP . On the pulse of Aust. Was never a cool idea, and the PM has rightly binned it. Well done PM.

They are not stupid! And know millions of us would go to Canberra if they try that shit on us!!!

No

Um.. nope.

I wasn’t going to download it anyway.

As long as EVERYONE downloads and installs it. . It's worrying that 80% of people will use that as a legitimate argument to ensure its not made mandatory.

Why was this even a thing that happened....

Disgraceful thought bubble to think free Australians would allow it to happen. Wars were fought for our fundamental freedoms. These powers have gone to their heads.

Imagine IF we started buying Bidet. All toilet roll problems solved. check it out !!

Coronavirus mobile tracking app may be mandatory if not enough people sign up, Scott Morrison saysA mobile phone app to help with coronavirus case tracing could be compulsory if not enough Australians voluntarily download the software for it to be effective. I beg your pardon? Unless you “volunteer”, we’ll force you? Good luck with that Scott. I’ll see you in court. Oh, really ?. You might wanna get legal advice on that...😡 ScoMo showing his true authoritarian colours. Whats next, compulsory membership to Hillsong? auspol
