The internet has been divided by a viral video in which a woman's reclined airplane seat is punched repeatedly by the passenger sitting behind her.

Replies to the tweet are divided, with some agreeing that the man was inconsiderate and many others saying the woman was actually at fault for reclining her seat – in part because the man was sitting in a back row, in a seat that could not recline.

Lisa Orr, a Toronto-based etiquette expert, says she was surprised both by the video itself and by the mixed reaction it received online. "In the end, the woman who put her seat back – she had a seat that reclined and she exercised that function. The man behind her assaulted her chair," she said. "A little bit of civility goes a long way. Recognizing that we're all human beings trying to get from point A to point B is really important," she said.

martaczur The seats were designed to recline. Everyone has the ability to select their seat online when booking the ticket. He made his choice.

Since I don’t travel much by the time I take a trip I usually ask who’s sitting next to me how do I do ..... and always gotten very nice people to show me

The worst offender is the guy. It verges on assault. Having said that I can’t stand it when people recline their seats. It’s obnoxious, space is limited. Just because u CAN do something doesn’t mean u SHOULD.

My guess for now not much people are flying. People can recline their seat as much as they want. I heard that you can even lay down straight most flights 😁 don't even bother having a mask because there not much passengers 🙄

Or maybe he should have kindly asked her to put her seat back because he felt he didn’t have enough room? But let’s keep excusing his behaviour because you know...men need their space 🙄. ridiculous manspreading givemeabreak

Seats recline. I always recline my seat. If the person don’t like it, fly first class. People know when they book those back seats (if they chose them) that they don’t recline. suckitup

I'm not a recliner on planes... but if u dont like it, tough, its not a rule... sooooo pay for first class or suck it up snowflake!!!!

The actual problem aren't the reclining seats or its 'etiquette' - it's the cramming of seats the airlines put in the plane. To optimize profit, they'll minimize the leg rooms so that more passengers can be added.

I hate recliners. Some planes recline right on my lap. Makes for a very uncomfortable flight. I wish they would take reclining away or move seats farther apart.

Peoples expectations when flying on an airline are way too high “Because we paid for the ticket”. Passengers try to get away with lots of stuff sometimes dangerous then argue with the crew and the staff that they “paid for a ticket” Examples:oversized carry on, dangerous goods

Lmao...throw a quarter in that chair. Be kind...don't recline.

He was in a non recline seat. It very tigyt and uncomfortable. Wrong but right.

She looks like a serious bag

It happened with me, I make it straight after back passenger requested and kind of angry. I didn’t like it but I didn’t want any trouble because I am a nice man lol

monaeltahawy 😂😂😂😂

Just add it to the list of things that humans are divided on. How can we POSSIBLY collectively work together on major issues like the climate emergency and global inequality when we can't even fly together!?

It was interesting the first 12 times, but please stop posting this every 5 minutes.

I always recline my seat. If the person behind doesn't have enough room, they are free to recline as well.

I see both sides. As a 6'3' person with a 36 inseam airline seats are tight, I can't fit my legs into an Air Canada rouge seat. There has been the odd occasion where I have had to tell the seat ahead that the seat will not go back because my knees. The Second Law of Physics

It’s not etiquette it’s the issue of airplanes making no room for anyone to move. Trying to put everyone in like sardines to maximize seats. The uproar should be against the airlines. They’re causing this

Since the airlines have reduced the space around each seat to get more seats on their flights, the seats should not have the ability to recline. I personally don’t do it anymore , knowing how uncomfortable it is for the person behind.

He should be charged

OMG! This is so very important! Passenger & freight trains have stopped operating & CTV talks about reclining seats? Seats that are intended to recline!

Take recliners out of short flights

These seats don’t recline enough to really bother anyone. She bought the seat and is entitled to use that seat as it functions. If it had been a man in the seat I bet this fellow would have never even thought about trying this. The flight attendant was wrong to blame the woman.

I was trying to play the sims on a plane and this man reclined his seat all the way and I couldn't use my laptop and Everytime I tried to move he felt it and got mad at me but I literally could not help it I couldn't move w out hitting his seat and he was such a jerk abt it

Airlines seats should be designed to slide the seat pan forward as the back reclines. Therefore it won’t impede on the space of the person behind and reduces the recliners legroom.

He’s a bit of a jerk!! I agree, if you want to recline then recline!! I don’t do it and I don’t like it when someone reclines into my space but would never stoop to that level.

Funny, back in the 1970s and 80s, when I used to travel a lot for business, this was never an issue. I suspect because back then there was more space between the rows. Now that airlines pack everyone in ever smaller spaces, however, it's a problem.

The problem here was the way the guy reacted like a huge ass baby So many things could be avoided if people used manners and didn't have giant egos that prevent them from asking or being nice

Guy is an A hole. Seeing more of this behaviour on planes recently.

If the pusher was a child, what would the airline or the lady have done? This guy has no right to punch her seat. I would’ve just put my seat upright. Not worth the neck pain.

Recline away!

That’s why I fly first class meh

I will always recline. Sorry not sorry. Upgrade to first class if you want more room or book ahead and get an emergency exit seat for more leg room. Don’t hate the player hate the game.

I’m almost 6’5 and I could care less if someone infront of me reclines and Ive flown as far as Toronto to Shanghai, however if someone did this when I recline which I do , I’d give him the BizNasty2point0 and knock him into the next time zone, he’d be spittinchiclets

Throw his ass off End of story ...

There is a reason the seats recline.. simply so you can do so. He could have paid to have an assigned seat. He would have went on knowing his seat didn't recline....and is obviously just sour about it. It's childish behaviour.

The behaviour the man displayed would be acceptable if he was 5

I don’t think you should ask the person behind if you can recline the option is there.airlines should remove it or make it optional in areas of plane.I hate the seat being reclined but the option is there to use.I would never tell a person not to recline but I hate them doing it!

This is stupid. They made the seats reclinable, therefore, she can recline it. He’s a dick for punching the seat. He could have easily asked her to move it back. She wouldn’t have HAD to move it back, but that’s not the point. Ppl suck😒

If the seat reclines...I’m reclining...don’t me I don’t care! I expect others to do the same

Shitty response from The attendant if that was true. Giving a guy who’s already violent more rum? Take recline buttons off seats if ppl are going to be assaulted for using them.

I would of got up and clocked that prick for hitting my seat repeatedly .

Simple answer: Never book a bulkhead seat or row in front of the exit aisle. These seats do not recline.

One of Lisa Orr's (etiquette expert) suggestions was to put more spaces between the seats. (More pitch.) THIS would reduce the number of PAYING pax by perhaps 6-10, reducing the Gross revenue, therefore raising the rate. It's a Very competitive business! Get used to it!😕

Bad mannered ass! So what she reclined, unfortunately for him his didn’t, doesn’t give him the right to act like a bad tempered child.

One opinion I think we can all agree upon is that we are packed in like sardines on a plane. Something has too be done about that which doesn’t involve paying extra for some legroom

Considering how crammed planes are, I think the woman was at fault. Airlines are a crap show.
